“I think that one of the big reasons why we are seeing such backlash against critical race theory is because its opponents saw all those young whites in the streets last summer with Black and Brown folks agitating and burning shit. They’re like, “Oh hell no! Scrub those textbooks. There will be no Bacon’s Rebellion 2.0.”What I mean is that this backlash isn’t so much about Black folks talking about racism. We’ve been critiquing this system ever since we learned how to speak, read, and write English. When I was in high school in the late 1990s I saw a similar backlash to multicultural studies. This backlash is about keeping young discontented white people who’ve been sold a false dream from galvanizing against a system that is screwing them too. So the power brokers and overlords are scapegoating a discipline that they actually know nothing about. They want to push the narrative that young people are pedagogically being poisoned by educators and scholars who scrutinize the American experiment and cultivate a treasonous mindset. ” Stacey Patton on FB
